Receiving Blessings

(When We Were Expecting a Beating)

It’s felt like a lot—this sense of collapse. Personally, professionally, spiritually, politically—everything. Things we thought were stable, structures we took for granted have fallen away. Even within each of us things have died… It’s been a rough year.

So our items are not just helpful talismans—they are crucial. Maybe that’s why you’ve joined us too. Barry and Spiros knew we needed change, which is why we undertook this operation.

We’ve felt The Tower falling. And through this, we sought guidance, clarity, inspiration—visions of new hope. The Star, without a doubt—but also Ganga Ma, the River of Life here in Kashi, the City of Light.

But the truth is, just getting here—finding a place, doing our magical operations, our mantras, our incantations—every step of the way, we’ve taken a beating.

So it was a boon to let go of our usual understanding of beatings. To simply be present. To receive blessings. To feel love. To allow our objects to receive blessings—on this sublime blessing day, Vasant Panchami.

We tuned into the precise muhurta timing and began our ritual. Twenty years ago, the image of the Dhobi Wall imprinted itself on our minds—those riverbank washers, their method of cleansing: each piece of clothing, beaten against the rocks. So this year, our operation echoed those motions, but with a focus on play, joy, psychic wavelengths, energetics. On receiving love. On receiving blessings from the divine.

I’m not quite sure what erupted between Barry and Spiros that ritual morning, but it was bursting with heartfelt energy—giggles and a shaking that reminded me as much of the ecstatic behavior the Quakers were once known for as it did the playful (and explosive) gas station scene in Zoolander. Every shirt, coin, and Rudraksha bead was held within our playful beatings—often struck only with prana, and at times with a beautiful peacock fan.

Up and down the ghats, towering Saraswati statues rose alongside massive sound systems, and the creative forces of Her great vibrations were celebrated throughout the night—and for several nights after.

Our focused intention was to ask for the grace of Saraswati—for her mercy and kindness—that her magic touch these sacred objects, instilling each piece with Her shakti, inspiration, guidance, perseverance, sensitivity, and grace. That each of you, all of us, may be moved in creative ways, expressing our noblest selves and giving voice to sublime artistry in a life of collaboration, presence, and hope.

In essence, and in alignment with the famous Major Arcana card, The Star—the very force that set this journey into motion—the conduit for this electric wizardry was carried through the waters of Ganga Ma.

The next day was another official Kumbh Mela bathing day: Achla Saptami (Moolya Snan). More than that, it was Surya Jayanti—or Ratha Jayanti—the appearance day of the Sun. A day for rekindling the inner flame. For embracing the divine. For leaning into trust—of the Sublime, Grace, God, and Goodness. So we lit a small lamp, connecting the individual light with the great light in the sky.
